THE PALLIUM.

RARE CEREMONY. ARCHBISHOP'S INVESTITURE. SECOND TIME IN DOMINION. Only once in the history of New Zealand has the Catholic Church ceremony been performed of investing an archbishop with the pallium, the symbol of his participation in the supreme pastoral power of the I'opc. That was in 1887, when "the pallium was conferred upon the late Archbishop Redwood, who then became officially Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand. Among the St. Patrick's College boys present 011 that occasion (says the "Evening Post") was Thomas O'Shea, who on Thursday next will be the central figuro in the second conferring of tlio pallium in New Zealand. By virtue of that ceremony he will officially succeed the late Archbishop Redwood in his two high positions in the Catholic Church in New Zealand. The pallium is a vestment which is conferred by the Pope upon every Metropolitan, either in person where the Metropolitan is near enough to Rome to journey to it, or by deputy where is at an inconvenient distance. It is buried with the recipient at his death. In Rome the ceremony of investiture is carried out by a Cardinal-Deacon; outsido of Rome by any bishop appointed for the purpose. In either case the ceremony follows the celebration of rontificial Mass. Bishop Luck, of Auckland, a Benedictine, gave the pallium to Archbishop Kedwood, ceremony being performed in Wellington. Although still a rarity in this country, the conferring of the pallium is fairly frequent in larger countries, where there are many more Metropolitans. While New Zealand has only one such dignitary, there are, for instance, four in Australia and about fifty in the United States. The celebrant of next Thursday s Solemn Pontificial High Mass, which will begin at the Church of St. Mary of the Angels at 10 a.m., will be the Right Rev. Dr. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch, and he will also act as delegate to the Holy See and invest the Metropolitan with the. pallium. The Right Rev. Dr. Whyte, Bishop of Dunedin, will preach the occasional sermon. Bishop Liston, of Auckland, who is at present in Rome, will be represented bv the Vlcar-Oeneral of the Diocese, the' Right. Rev. Monsignor Call ill, and some CO or 70 priests and dignitaries from all parts of the Dominion will be present. The Mass will be in ancient Gregorian plain chant, the choir consisting of boys of Silverstream College, under the conductorsliip of Father C. Feelily.
