CYCLING.

PAPATOETOE CLUB

Papatoetoe Club was represented in the junior centre race of 13 miles by R. Waterman, C. Picknell, J. Picknell and F. Glendinning. Although they were not placed, each rode in such .an efficient manner as to be a credit to the club.

What one of the motor cycle followers of the senior race (himself no mean pedaller in his day) reports as the brightest spot in the event the great effort of Gordon Robinson, of the club, who finished third. It is stated that nearly all the hard work was done by Robbie, who not only was the only one to the first two, but gave them something to do to keep with him. And then, after these great efforts, he led out in a long sprint and was beaten by a very small margin for first place. This is Robbie's first season in cycle racing, yet he has performed well in every race he has ridden in, riding solidly and giving flashes of brilliance which please all followers of the sport.

Papatoetoe riders do not seem to care for centre races, which is rather a pity, as those who compete have fair success.

There are only two more centre races left now, the "classics" of the road season. The 44-mile "harbour" race comes off on September 7, while the "100" is run off on the first Saturday in October and winds up the road season. Next week will see seniors and juniors racing over the Wallace Road circuit. The following Saturday the seniors will be competing for the Tradesmen's Cup over the 22-mile Howick circuit. This race was intended for seniors, yet Bill Bayley has arranged for juniors to compete on condition that junior nominations are in the handicapper's hands by Saturday next, August 10, while the junior championship will be run off the following Saturday over the Papaknra course. Ray Mclnnarney is undergoing medical treatment for an injury to his back and ribs and will not race again this season. Club members join in wishing him a speedy and permanent recovery.
