MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH.
MR. TATTNABCA HEMI PAX
The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital yesterday, unexpectedly, of Mr. Taunaha Hemi (Jimmy) Pai, aged 50, leader of the Ngatiteata sub-tribe, whose territory extends from Mangere to Waiuku. Within the past 18 months he had loHf by death his wife and four children. One of the children died only last week. His mother, aged 92, is still living.
Born at Kauri, on the Manukau Harbour, the second son of the late Hemi Pai, he was closely related to the leading chiefs of both the Ngapuhi and Waikato tribes, being a grandson of Ropata, an early Ngapuhi missionary who married Turia, a Wikato chieftainess. He was a well-known footballer, having played for Manukau Rovers and later in the League code.
Arrangements are being made for a large tangi, at which representatives of the Waikato and Northern tribes are expected to be present.
