MR. A. HARRIS, M.P., RETIRING,

NEW CANDIDATE MENTIONED.

Mr. 'Alexander Harris, M.P., who has represented the Waitemata constituency in Parliament continuously for 24 years, announced at a meeting of his election committees this afternoon that he did not intend to recontest the seat at the. general election.

"I have decided to take a rest," he said. "My intention is to devote ray time to a little more leisure and give greater attention to my own husiness and private affairs. I can only trust that whatever the result of the elections may be Waitemata will be worthily represented in the 1930 Parliament. When the time comes for me to sever my connection with the public life of Waitemata I will do so with sincere regret. I feel that I have had a good innings. I hope I have been able to hit a few boundaries to the advantage of the people I have tried to serve. If I have, I have been well rewarded." Two Already Announced. The Waitemata contest promises to be of more than usual interest. Candidates already announced are Mr. J. Guiniven (Liberal) and Mr. W. J. Lyon (Labour). The Democrat party also has a candidate in view. With Mr. Harris retiring, the National Political Federation is faced . ith the task of selecting a new candidate, and the.name of Mr. Alexander Macgregor has been freely mentioned. Mr. Macgregor, a resident of North Shore, is headmaster of the Mount Eden School. He is 57 years of age and was appointed to his present position early in 1929. Formerly he was at Eichmond Road and Onehunga Schools. In 1931 the voting in Waitemata resulted:—A. Harris (Coalition Reform), 5593; A. G. Osborne (Labour), 3215; W. B. Darlow (Ind. United), 1769. In 1928 the.voting resulted:—A. Harris (Ind. Reform), 4653; R. H. Greville (United), 4368; A. G. Osborne (Labour), 2485.
