NEW CRISIS BETWEEN JAPAN AND CHINA.
RECENT INCIDENT.
Chinese Official Suspect in Murder Charge. SATISFACTION DEMANDED. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 6. "The Times" Peking correspondent states that Chinese official circles are in consternation owing to the Japanese detaining Tao Shang-min, former inspector in the Launtung section of the demilitarised zone, whence he removed at the Japanese request. He is now a member of Peking Political Council.
LONDON, August 6
Tao called at the Japanese Embassy in response to a telephone message. It is believed he is incarcerated in the Japanese barracks on suspicion of implication in the assassination of the Chinese gendarmerie commander at Launchow when a Japanese gendarme was also wounded.
A Japanese major attached to the Japanese military staff informed the chairman of the Political Council that they view the matter gravely. It is feared a fresh crisis is impending, owing to their demanding punishment of all responsible for the incident, and a guarantee that no further outrages will take place.
