"DELIGHTED."
MENUHIN FAMILY. IMPRESSIONS OF N.Z. TOURING PLANS. "We are delighted with New Zealand," said M. Menuhin yesterday on his return to Auckland with his family from their tour of the South. "We have resolved to return in four years' time on a pleasure trip. Next to California we would rather live in New Zealand than in any other country we have seen."
'"Winter?" queried the father of the famous violinist. "This isn't winter! Why, look at the sun," and he pointed through the window to fitful gleams.
M. Menuhin and his son Yeliudi discussed New Zealand audiences. They praised New Zealand taste and behaviour. Did they think there was too frequent applause between parts of long works? No. Sometimes applause was not out of place in the middle of a composition. The number of requests for Bach items had impresed them as proof of the soundness of New Zealand appreciation.
Yehudi Menuhin is booked to return to Australia and then play in South Africa and Europe. Then the family will have a year off—"Mother's year," M. Menuhin called it —which they will spend in the family property in California.
"Germany?" said Mr. Menuhin. "No, Yehudi will not play in Germany so long as the Nazi policy is what it is. We have had, several requests to do so and Yehudi's records have a large sale there, but he will not play there until he can play the Mendelssohn Concerto in Berlin with Bruno Walter conducting!"
