WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

GLEN EDEN. The Glen Eden Women's Institute held their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon in the Anglican Hall. Two elocutionary items were presented by Mrs. Clegg and a flower competition was won by Mrs. Kirkbride first and Mrs. Brown second. First prize for sponge sandwich was won by Mrs. Coe, with Mrs. Roberts second. A guessing competition and prize supplied by Mrs. A. Elshaw was won by Miss Day.

KOMAKORAU. The institute held its first birthday on Thursday in the Komakorau Hall, when there were present visitors from the Gordonton, Taupiri, Whitikahu, Horsham Downs and Horotiu Institutes. A music competition was won by Mrs. J. Crampton and Mrs. C. W. Gower (Gordonton). The programme consisted of two pianoforte solos by Mrs. R, T. Hill, a play by Misses M. Walter and A. Clarke (Taupiri), a studio sketch by members of the local institute, songs by Mrs. S. A. Clarke and a recitation by Mrs. A. J. Smith. The birthday cake, which was beautifully iced by Mrs. A. Smith, was cut by Mrs. S. Clarke (Taupiri). HENDERSON. The monthly meeting of the Henderson Women's Institute was held in the Forester's Hall last Thursday. Mrs. K. Sacke was in the chair. An address illustrated by lantern slides was given by Mrs. Parkes, and the soft toy competition was won by Mrs. Morris. For the vase of flowers Mrs. Morris was first and Mrs. Erceg second. In the marmalade competition Mrs. Dustin was first and Mrs. Erceg second. The institute's annual fair was held in the supper room of the Town Hall last Saturday, and was opened by Mrs. Teape, president of the Auckland Centre. In the cooking competition the prizes for butter sponge sandwich and shortbread were won by Mrs. Wright, and for sausage rolls by Mrs. Massey.

TURANGARERE. At the August meeting of the Women's Institute four of the younger members, Misses Eagan, Chadwick, J. Millan, and Bartell, gave a humorous play, entitled, "The Company Will Recite," which was greatly enjoyed. Mre. Snell, who is leaving the district, was presented with a posy. Mrs. Snell then presented the members with a framed copy of the institute's monogram. Mrs. Snell also entertained all the members at afternoon tea. Mrs. Murdock gave an interesting and helpful demonstration on pruning. Miss Chadwick supplied the .motto for the day. In the competition, an article not costing more than 1/, Mrs. Murdock was first, a-nd Mrs. Eagan second.
