GAOLED IN FRAUD DISPUTE.
SANTIAGO (Chile), June 30,
The Government's official art critic, Mariano Casanova, whose duty it is to protect the public against fakes, to-day was sentenced to sixty-one days in ga-01, fined 500 pesetas and suspended. He refused to appear in Court to defend newspaper articles exposing what he asserted to be a. fraudulent gallery. The gallery owner had been holding exclusive exhibitions containing paintings bearing famous signatures and using the name of Miguel Cruchaga Tocornal, Foreign Minister, as sponsor. The gallery owner brought action, and Senor Casanova refused to appear in Court, saying that he preferred gaol and refused to retract the charges. Many prominent artists expressed indignation over to-day's procedure, declaring that Senor Casanova's judgment was sound.
