GOOD NAME VINDICATED
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
HAMILTON, Tuesday
When the caec of H. A. Vercoe v. L. H. Pettit was called in tho Magistrate's Court to-day, Mr. H. M. Hammond, for plaintiff, explained that on May 27 last Vercoe ,a stock agent, had been prosecuted by the Automobile Association ou a charge of having defaced a notice board on Trafford's Hill, between Opotiki and Gisborne. Although the information had been dismissed, said counsel, Vercoe had felt that his reputation had suffered in consequence of the proceedings. Information had subsequently been obtained as to the identity of tho person who had actually defaced the board and action had since been brought by Vercoe against L. H. Pettit, an auctioneer, for the recovery by way of special damages of the costs incurred by Vercoe in defending the prosecution instituted by the Automobile Association. Pettit, said counsel, had admitted defacing the board, and had paid the full amount claimed as damages against him, together with costs, thus effectively vindicating Vercoe. The case was struck out.
