BRUTAL OUTRAGE.
PROFESSOR SLAIN. Horrifying Crime of Abductor Revealed. JILTED LOVER SUSPECTED. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11 a.m.) CHICAGO, July 31. Walter Bauer, professor of chemistry at Ohio University, who is himself taking courses at the University of Michigan, was abducted, it is believed by one of his wife's rejected suitors. While being driven in an automobile from Annarbor he was so badly mutilated with a penknife by his abductor that he died from wounds upon his arrival here. Professor Bauer, who was found lying in a pool of his own blood as the automobile drove up to a petrol station, told the police before he died that he believed a disappointed lover against whom his wife had warned him, had bound, gagged and mutilated him.
Mrs. Bauer, who married the professor only three weeks afro, has been summoned from Cleveland with photographs of the alleged slayer. The police said that an operation, which was performed without anaesthetic or antiseptic, showed considerable surgical skill.
