BANDITS' CAPTIVES.
Britishers' Ransom Reduced More Than Half. GERMAN FREE ON "PAROLE." (Received 12.30 p.m.) PEKING, July 31. The commander of the militia at Pao-chang has made contact with the bandits who are holding Mr. Gareth Jones, formerly Mr. Lloyd George's secretary, and Dr. Herbert Mueller, a German journalist, to ransom, 200 miles inland from Peking.
The commander states that the brigands have reduced the ransom for Mr? Jones from £8000 to £3400. A note to this effect was taken to Kalgan from Pao-chang by Dr. Mueller, who stated that he had been released only on parole. ' A former note demanding £8000 for the two men had been convej'ed by their Russian chauffeur.
