BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. George Mills, presiding. Puriri Road Subsidence. —The chairman of the -works committee, Mr. E. J. Osborne, stated that the estimated cost of making an entirely new culvert, widening the roadway and surfacing was £1600, of which £600 was labour, £900 materials and £100 administration. Mr. Osborne, however, pointed out that this amount should be reduced by £720 by the council undertaking the work, so as to obtain a subsidy on labour, utilising the stone from the quarry and its own lorry for cartage. The work is to be put in hand immediately. . - Outfall for Sewerage.—lt was decided to support the protest against the proposed sewerage outfall for the combined North Shore boroughs being located at Castor Bay.
Appointments.—Mr. H. D. Boles was appointed traffic inspector, and Mr. A. G. Evans dog registrar. Wharf Shelter.—An estimate is to be obtained of the cost of a suitable footway shelter. the Harbour Board having agreed to erect a cover over the wharf on condition that the council provided a covering over the roadway for the protection from thq weather of ferry ana bus passengers.
