CYCLING.

WITH THE* AMATEURS. PAPATOETOE CLUB. Last Saturday the Papatoetoe Amateur Cycling Club held two races under rather unfavourable conditions. The state of the roads and a rather strong wind affected fast times. The juniors conducted a time trial over the Papakura course, a distance of 15 miles, with concrete roads all the way. C. Picknell, winner of last week's centre race, rode-. ..well to win by a substantial margain. This lad is improving with every race, and will still be in the money off a tighter mark. F. Glendenning (2.30), riding very consistently during the season, was placed second. This rider can always unwind a good sprint at the end of' a race, an advantage that will carry him a long way in the sport. W. McGliie went well to be placed third. A win should soon come his way.

No surprise was caused when it was made known that Ralph Waterman had gained fastest time. By his very creditable performance in last week's centre race lie was a hot favourite.- Riding now with a lot of confidence, Ralph should give a good account of himself in next week's centre race.

And what were the seniors doing while this was going on? At 2.20 Mike Watson and A. Gr. Robinson were the first to leave on a 30-mile out-and-home over the Clevedon course. Xine minutes later they were followed by tlie scratch pair, S. Pinfold and R. Mclnnarriey, and approximately an hour and a half later 0. B. White showed the way up the straight to S. Webster and A. Robinson.

Owen White showed a welcome return to form to lead the field in, and get the encouragement of a decisive win over the next two. Sel. Webster was hard pushed by Gordon Kobinson over the last 100 yards. Sel. started off with lan Vost, who finished strongly, despite a badly-grazed knee, which he obtained when he spilled out on a rough strip. This also unseated Ken Mclnnarney, who was going well at the time of the accident. When half a mile from home Gordon Robinson, with a great burst, got away from the first-placed two. but could not hold the pace, being caught again on the last corner after making a break of about 50 yards. He then engaged in a flat-out sprint for the line with Sel. Webster. Spectators were thrilled when the cycles almost touched, but Sel. scraped home with inches to spare. Next in was Mike Watson. Mike was idling up the straight when he was reminded that there were others in the race by greatly excited spectators. With a great spurt he headed off Babe Pinfold, who was coining up like the Limited. Thought to be sure of a place, R. Cooke was very unlucky to split a rim when well up and coimr well.

• Ricfing alone for the greater part of the distance. Sid. Pinfold clocked time in Ho.lo. There is some question as to the correctness of this time, as in the last event over this course the time was round 88 minutes. Sid.'s co-marker, Ray Mclnnarney, turned back on the run out at Papakura and lent a helping hand to Bob. Alexander, who punctured.

TAKAPUNA CLUB. The Takapuna Club held two events on Saturday, a two-lap (7% miles) junior event and an eight-lap (30 miles) senior race. The latter race was for the Harrison Cup and proved somewhat disappointing. The only bright spot in a rather mediocre performance was provided by the efforts of Blomfield, Keating and Eagles. The last-named, off 45.5, lapped very consistently and until he collapsed with cramp he was in for time. lialph baa not quite recovered his form since his operation. Val. Blomfield finished in first place, with fastest time honours, after a solid unpaccd ride from the 2.15 mark. Bio. is steadily eom-in&irrto form and -in. future should make things tough for the backmarkers. It is pleasing to see this gocxl rider showing up to confound some ot tiic pessimists who quoted him a spent mwnber Val. has one thing that will always stand by him—that is, gaaneness. Denny Keating, off. 3.15, pedalled very steadily to finish second in 80.52, white George Williams plugged along into third place, off the 1.45 mark, in 86.33. The limit rider, Peter McCayery(7.o), was the only other rider to finish, the rest of the field withdrawing for various "inTh'e juniors first place and fastest •time went to L. Denning, from the scratch mark, who outclassed the opposition. Trevor Bassett, off 1.0, rode steadily into second place, but had no chance with the winner in the sprint. The palm for this race goes to Dave Bowsie (3.0). This youngster was having his first ride in a cycle race and handled his machine like a veteran He shows remarkable aptitude for a beginner and should do well, if he devotes Plenty of attention to training, for this part of the game seems to be over looked by far too many of the riders in tins club. The big prizes never go to the unfit brigade. On Saturday week the club will be the guests of the Lynndale Club, and on the following Saturday the Takapuna Club will be holding an open race of 22%jniles and an invitation is issued to all amateur cyclists to send in their nominations to tne secretary of the Takapuna Club, Mr. H. Mayo, Takapuna.
