FRENCH VISITORS.
MANY FUNCTIONS. FLYING BOAT OVER CITY. WREATH PLACED AT CENOTAPH. Both officers and men of the visiting French sloop Amiral Charner have had their time fully occupied since their arrival yesterday, fulfilling the many official, and social engagements that have been arranged in their honour. After the exchange of the customary courtesy calls by representatives of' His Majesty's Forces, the City Council and local authorities in Auckland, Commander P. A. C. Hi Adelus. officers and M. Edouard Joubert, Consul for France at Auckland, with a guard of 20 men placed a wreath at the foot of the Cenotaph. General Sir George Richardson and other members of the Returned Soldiers' Association were also present at the ceremonv.
Last evening the Hon. J. O. Cobbe, representing HU Majesty's Government in New Zealand, gave a dinner of welcome to Commander Adelus and his officers at the Grand Hotel. Among the guests wore Sir Alexander Herdnian, Commander B. ('. li. Brooke, senior naval officer at. Auckland. Colonel .1. E. Duigan, officer commanding the Northern Command. Squadron -Leader L. M. Isitt, officer commanding the llobsonville Air Base, Mr. Bernard Martin, deputyMayor, Mr. C. (!. Macindoe. chairman of the. Auckland Harbour Board, the Hons. John Alexander, C.M.G., and Eliot Davis, M.L.C.. and M. Joubert. After the dinner the commander and officers wero entertained at an informal dance, arranged by the ladies' committee of the Xavy League.
A .party of petty officers and Tiien of the visiting sloop were taken for a drive yesterday to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. One Tree Hill and Titirangl by the Flying Anpcl Missions to Seamen. In the evening a concert and dance was held at the Institute to Seamen, Sturdee street, the entertainment being provided by the Tres Bon Concert Party. A second outing by motor bus was provided for the men this afternoon.
This morning the Sehreek flying boat, carried on the Amiral Chnrner. made several short flights over the city, with Lieutenant-Commander J. Gilbert (aviation) at the controls. A longer Might was made later by Commander Adelus, who was a famous war-time ace. accompanied by Squadron-Leader Isitt.
This afternoon Commander > Adolus gave an official luncheon on board, and in the evening he and his officers will be the guests of M. .Toubort at a dinner at the Grand Hotel. To-morrow the commander and several officers loav<> for a visit to Rotorua and the Waitoma Caves. The Amiral Charner will now leave Auckland on Wednesday afternoon, a day Inter than was expected. She will be open for public inspection on Saturday and Sunday between one and five o'clock. Open For Inspection. Commander Adelus announced this morning that the sloop would be open for public inspection on Saturday and Sunday, between the hours of one and five in* the afternoons.
