SAMPLE OF GRANITE.
EQUAL TO IMPORTED ARTICLE
WEST COAST DEPOSITS
(By Telegraph-—Own Correspondent.)
O AMARU, this day
A well-known monumental mason, Mr. John Cromhie, brought into the "Oamaru Mail" office samples of granite obtained on the Eglinton Valley Road. He considers the quality equal to that of the best granite of Scotland and Norway. There is a good range of shades from almost white to dark grey. The stone is of very close grain and of fine texture. Mr. Crombie sent several specimens to Auckland to be polished, and the finished article is indistinguishable by experts from imported granite. Men who have spent a lifetime in the study of granite agree that the quality is equal to the highest grade mined in any part of the world. It responds to poiishing and finishing equally as well as other high grade granites, giving a ■brilliant appearance. Mr. Crombie says there appears to be unlimited deposits "where the samples were taken, about 18 miles from the West Coast sounds. The deposits have great commercial value.
