A shop assistant employed'by a city department store was arrested yesterday (tu a cburae of stealing four shirts, valued at £1 14/. from the store on July 12. He was David Harry, aged 24. and lie pleaded guiltv to the charge wlien lie came before M'\ . 11. Mt'Kean. S.M.. this morning in the Police Court. Sub-Inspector Fox said that on Monday last Constable Sutherland, of the Newton police. discovered tbat Barry bad sold two shirts for •">/ .each to two other young men who lived in the same private hotel as Barry in Pitt Street. The constable also ascertained that l'arry was cmnloved in the city store, and he inquired from a member of the linn whether any shirts had been stolen. On checking up on the stock it was found that four shirts were missing. No suspicion bad been attached to Barrv. who bad been i'l the firm's employ for five months. Barry later admitted the theft of the shirts. '•This youmr man lias a list of previous eonvi'* : ous. and has been in the Bor-tal." added Mr. Kox. "In view of hi* record I would ask for a remand to enable further inquiries to be made."
Mr. Sullivan said that the rasp was nil unfortunate one. Although Barry had a formidable li->t of previous convictions the offences were coniinitted when he was very young, lie had been deprived of the guardianship of parents, and some years ago was involved in had company. as the result of which he was given a term in the Borstal. Since his release he had licen trying to make good. Mr. Sullivan asked that liarry lie given another chance. Harry was remanded until Thursday, in custodv.
