ARAWA CONDITIONS.
The statements recently published from facts supplied by the chairman of Te Arawa Trust Board relating to the poor condition of some of the houses occupied by members of the Arawa people, have caused grave concern among the various sub-tribes. The facts disclosed have been brought before the notice of the Arawa Welfare League, and after consideration, the league, whose function it is to safeguard the traditional prestige of the people, desires to express very strongly regret at the unnecessary publicity given to the matter. If the facts, as stated by Mr. Tai Mitchell (chairman of Te Arawa Trust Board), are true, then we may point out that the trust fund handled by it during the last 12 years has amounted to £72,000. This fund was clearly and definitely set down to be expended for the sole benefit of the members of Te Arawa people. The very people whose housing conditions are said to bo so terribly in need of repairs, are beneficiaries of this enormous fund. . T. K. THOMPSON, j Secretary Arawa Welfare League. '
