SAFETY FIRST DRIVE.
MADRID, June 10.
Madrid is enjoying greatly the efforts of the police to force pedestrians to cross the streets only at the appointed crossings and when the .traffic signals permit of this. Within a few days 2000 people have been lined two pence each for infringing the new rules. The fines are collected at once, and those who decline to pay are at once arrested.
Crowds gather during the busy hours of the day at the principal crossings in order to watch the spectacle of the police chasing those who try to slip through the traffic "unnoticed. Tlie present activities of the municipal police are reminiscent of the efforts last summer to prevent motorists from hooting between the night hours of 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock, but despite precautions and lines Madrid continues to be the noisiest city in Europe by day and by night.
