SOCIETY OF ARTS.

SKETCH CLUB EVENING.

At a meeting of the Auckland Society of Arts Sketch Club last evening an interesting address on the subjects for the month, "Model Drawing" and "Still Life," was giyen by Mr. E. Wadham. The speaker treated the model drawing sketches under the headings of anatomy, proportion of the different parts of the figure and the rendering of poses, while the sketches were dealt with under the divisions of water-colour, pastel and black-and-white work. Mr. Wadham emphasised the necessity for careful placing of the subject to be sketched and for discreet selection of complementary, colours, especially in Nature studies. Colour, he said, required much more careful treatment in three-dimensioned studies than in those of two dimensions. The scientific side of colour was also mentioned by the speaker, who explained how colour changed under lights of different shades and intensity. The artist, he said, had found out more about colour than the scientist, possibly because he saw it from the viewpoint of emotion and intellect, while the scientist treated in solely from the ' scientific point of view. The chairman, Mr. Wadham, presided at the meeting, and a hearty vote of thanks was moved by Mr. A. J. T. Judkins.
