US FRIEND'S CLOTHES.
IELGIAK ON THEFT CHARGE.
ONE MONTH'S HARD LABOUR.
(By Telegraph.— Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. For what Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., described as a mean theft, a Belgian was to-day ■sentenced to a month's hard 'abotir for stealing some clothes in Auckland early in, January. Accused was Louis Francis Coppens, aged 32, and he was charged with stealing a suit of clothes and a blazer, valued \t £4 15/. the ' property of Luke Earl ■Stewart. Mr. A. A. Harrison appeared fpr Coppens, who admitted the theft. Detective Nalder eaid that , Coppens :amc to Xew Zealand in 1930. In Auck'and in January lie was "broke." He was befriended by a man, who gave him a bed and a meal. Then, in the absence of his friend, Coppens took the clothing. He was before the Court at Dargaville . in April and was fined. "I think he would be better with a month in Auckland, and. I do not advise hini to conic back here," said Mr. Morris, in sentencing Coppens to a Tnonth'a lard
