A DANIEL COME TO JUDGMENT?

When Mr, Doidge, a short while back, told us that all the leading British statesmen were incompetent, most Englishmen felt that it was a pity Mr. Doidge deserted England in her hour of need. 'Now he tells us that he is standing for Parliament in this country, and he proceeds to show us what we need. Incidentally, he announces his latest discovery — "The leaders of the Labour party are Socialists." He contemplates it with horror! Such naivete in a journalist of Mr. Doidge's experience is unprecedented. Of course the Labour leaders are Socialists —so are a great many more people. Dr. Sutch, one of Mr. Coates' economic advisers, provides the proof. He advocates "planning." Planning is Socialism, and Dr. Sutch says that the countries which are doing the most planning are the United Kingdom and Soviet Russia. Does Mr. Doidge also contemplate that with horror? He is surely wrapped in the mists of antiquity. The days when Socialists wore red tics and long hair and breathed fire and brimstone were the "old days," and Dr. Sutch says "the world will not go back to the old days." Have we in Mr. Doidge a "Daniel," or is it simply our old friend Rip Van Winkle? C. E. ARCHIBALD.
