STORY OF ARREST.
POLICE BREAK IN BY ROOF.
Six detectives raided premises on the cornei- of Yelverton Terrace and Grey Avenue on Saturday afternoon to arrest the four Chinese who appeared in Court this morning. Having experienced the barrier of barricaded doors and windows before, the police devised a novel means of gaining entrance to the suspect premises. They went through the roof. By means of a ladder they gained the roof of the building; they * broke through a skylight, and by means of a "jemmy" they levered off one of the ceiling boards. Then they fixed a length of stout rope to a convenient rafter and thus slid, hand over fist, through the hole in the ceiling into the room below. In the meantime other detectives had gone round to the back door, the other possible means of escape for those inside the house. Among other articles which the police search revealed were small wooden head-rests, a number of opium pipes scarcely cold, and one or two small lamps. In a room adjoining that into which the police gained entry, a number of Chinese were lying on mats on the floor.
