RACING AT TRENTHAM

THE WINTER MEETING.

CAKD FOR TO-MORROW.

EXCELLENT FIELDS ENGAGED.

The -winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will open at Trentham to-morrow, and will be continued o*n Thursday and Saturday. Excellent fields have been paid up for on the first day, and class is well represented, with the result that there should be some splendid racing. The going ie sure to heavy. The system of bettins will be win and place. Tne Opening Event. The Hariri Steeplechase, an event for hacks and hunters, which will open the proceedings, has attracted a field of twelve. Cotslield won well at Wanganui, but he has failed to score again since then, though ho was second in the June Steeplechase at Hawke's Bay to Dozie. Diamond won in his first start over the big fences at Levin last Saturday, but the course was an easy one. However, he has been schooled over the country at Trentham, and should go well. Invictus has disappointed this season, while Reminder won the Tahuna Steeplechase on the first day at Dunedin last month. Anemometer won the Park Steeplechase on the second day of the recent Napier Park meeting, after finishing second to Dozie in the Napier Steeplechase on the first day. He should be in the money again. Monastic ran second to Velvet in the Dromore Steeplechase at Ashburton. The Ranger is an unlikely starter. Of the others, Petrarch, Gardhu, Sir- Musk and Taura Lad appeal most. A trio who may be fancied are

DIAMOND ANEMOMETER CARDHU.\ The Woburn Hack. The largest field of the day is carded for the Woburn Handicap, a hack event run. over six furlongs. Sunny Maid was a winner at Napier Park and Hawke's Bay after showing good form in previous efforte during the last month. Full Throttle scored at "the Dannevirke Hunt meeting last Wednesday, and should again go well. Dollar Bill has been a # most consistent winner recently, and at his last start wae successful over sis furlongs at Levin. He should also be very troublesome. Master Reynard showed good form at the Marlborough meeting, winning one race and finishing second in his other two efforts there. Solaria raced well at the Great Northern meeting, but has not started, since. Reports from the south indicate that he has improved in. condition. State Bank scored at Egmont in May last against a good field, while Isaacs was successful in three events at Nelson and Marlborough, and Brown Pearl was second at Dunedin recently, and is a useful sort. Gray Boy scored over'six furlongs at Foxtor while Gold Fox has shown -good form in the south, winning • at Dunedin in May last. Grand Score was second' to Bazaine at | Levin last month, and he has previously displayed a partiality for Trentham. Mount Val won over seven furlongs at Dunedin, while-of the others Landlubber, Collision, , McHeath, Happy Hunting and Linguist seem the best. Landlubber showed up prominently in his races at 'the Great Northern meeting,' and ie stated to be very well. A preference should be shown for DOLLAR BILL GRAND SCORE. FULL THROTTLE. Vittoria Hack Hurdles. Semper Paratus is topweight in the Vittoria Hack Hurdles, but he has not won: over the battens for some tune, though he scored on the flat at the Wairarapa meeting at Easter. King Thomond rail second at Dannevirke last week, 'which was his first start for some time. He should be improved. Hunting Jay is a" recent recruit to jumping, and he im--1 pressed by his third at Napier Park recently. Adult was a winner at, South Canterbury, and Saltspray was placed at Otaki, and is a likely improver: Master Musk lias shown useful form in the Auckland district, and was second in the Remuera Hurdles at the Great Northern fixture. Journet, Swift and Sure and Imaeurvey seem the pick of the others. The best backed may be HUNTING- JAY KING THOMOND SALTSPRAY. Stewards' Handicap. I Some first-class sprinters are engaged in the Stewards' Handicap. Rebel Chief failed at Ellerslie, but since hia return South has shown winning form. Orapai is a good sprinter, who should be improved by his outing at Levin. Sea Fox, Guarantee and Kemal Pasha have each won recently in the south, and promise to again be hard to beat. Slippery has eh own a liking for this course, and his recent racing indicates that he is not far off hia best again. Good Hunting failed at the Great Northern meeting, but is likely to do better at Trentham this week. Refresher is a good sprinter, while of the rest Tybalt, Prince Acre, Sunny Maid, Aetarth, Cawbeen, Royal Bengal and Hunting Lodge have performed well recently. Both Tybalt and Prince Acre have good Auckland form to commend them. The bast backed may be REBEL CHIEF PRINCE ACRE SEA FOX. The Big Steeples. Valpeen, who is at the head of the Wellington Steeplechase, raced-.well without getting intp the money at the Greai Northern fixture. Riotous was successful in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and also at Te Rapa this winter, and after his third in this event last season he will have support. Tudor is stated to be coming right again, and if he is at his best he will take, some beating, but he has done very little racing for. twelve months. Royal Limond won-the Great Northern Steeplechase, and on that showing will be entitled to respect. However, those lower down may trouble him, Transact is stated to be an unlikely starter, while Dunmure is a Southern steeplechaser who scored at Riverton, and is well spoken of. Haakon, after his good Ellerslie form, will probably be favourite. Ruby Meteor is stated to have gone on the right way since he -ran second to him in the Winter Steeplechase. London also performed prominently at the Great Northern meeting, and Ae is expected to go well to-morrow. ITozie is a good jumper, and is entitled to respect. Pahu fell in his three outings at Ellerslie, The bulk of the money may come for HAAKON LONDON RIOTOUS. The Trentham Hurdles. Thirteen are paid up for in the Trentham Hurdles. Rasouli won this event last year, and also annexed the Winter Hurdles at the same fixture! He was very narrowly beaten in the Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie last month, and should be an improved .horse to-morrow. High Grader has won; his last twe contests over hurdles, and should be one of the favourites. Strtnchion won the Great Northern Hurdles and the Remuera Hurdles at the Great Northern meeting, and he ie etated to be right at his best again. Hounslow has no form for a long time past, though he is.sajd to be very well. Black Duke has been winning in tht South, but the class may be too good foi him. Manawatu, after his recent form both on the flat and over luirdles, should bo in the picture. Travelling Agent won at Te Rapa and Ellerslie, and will have plenty of friends, while Tareha- and Lycidus appeal most of the others. The public may go for HIGH GRADER TRAVKLILNG AGENT MANAWATU. Whyte' Handicap.

The Whyte Handicap is one of the principal Hat events at the meeting, and- it has drawn an excellent Held. Curie its Rood at a mile, and has recent winning form to his credit. He has won this event previously. Davolo was successful last year, but has had no recent racing. Alight and Croupier have been galloping well recently, and West Tor has been successful in his last three starts —twice at Wanganui and once at Dannevirke. Ho has a good show. Kemal Pasha and Guarantee have both got an earlier engagement, but if reserved for this race they should perform well. Lord Val was third in the Whyte Handicap last year, and recently won the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. He has improved .since then. Hoi'owhenua was successful over a mile at the same fixture. Lapel raced well at Wanganui and Otald, while Miss Hushabye was second at Levin. She was not qnito ready then. Wino has been going -well in the south, as has Royal Gallant, both winning several races recently. Boudoir, Pladie and Water Power appeal most o; the others. The race is a very opeu one, but most support may go to LORD VAL HOROWHENTTA WEST TOR. The Tβ Aro Hack. Another large field is engaged in the Te Aro Hack Handicap, and recent form points to the favourites beirn: ARCTIC KTNG REBEL LAD.
