"WHEELBARROW DERBY."
WHANGAREI SHOW RACE.
i (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WHANGAREI, this day.
On Saturday the "Wheelbarrow Derby," one of the brightest events in the history of Whangarei, was staged. The broad width of the two streets merging at the Triangle was too narrow to accommodate the 40-odd starters who turned out to chase the prize money on a gruelling run. The sides of the streets were lined with people, who cheered and urged the competitors to greater ■efforts. The first to put in a puffing appearance at the foot of the slope were R. Donaldson and K. Given. The latter went up the hill at a good bat, with A. Fricker and F. Power a good second. The others were straggling. Most of the crowd had assembled at the entrance to the Winter Show Building, where Given and Donaldson "flashed" past the judge fairly easy winners. Both are members of the Whangarei Amateur Athletic Club. Then came Fricker and Power, and the third pair were L. G. Graham and J. Wilson. Nearly all finished, the last pair being about ten minutes behind the winners. The prize purse was £4, and the second pair divided £1.
