McGRATH WINS.

WIMBLEDON SURPRISE Three New Zealanders Victors In First Round. BOROTRA DEFEATS HENKEL. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 24. The British lawn tennis championships began at Wimbledon in a heat wave, which was tempered by a pleasant breeze. The courts were exceptionally well grassed, but gave a good pace considering recent wet weather. Turnbull, on an outer court, opened the Australians' programme against Van Ryn. The American continually forced Turnbull into errors on the backhand, and easily won the match. Wood brilliantly defeated Itoh in straight sets. The match of the day wis between McGrath and Allison. The former played his best, tennis of the tour, driving pungently and lobbing with discretion. McGrath kept a.» beautiful length" and frequently passed Allison when the American cariie to the net. McGrath received an ovation for eliminating the fifth "seeded" player, a surprising but well-deserved achievement. The fourth set was extraordinary. Allison led s—o and held set-point, which he lost with a double-fault. McGrath, who apparently was content to drop the set, then changed his mind, went "all out," and by vigorous driving and volleying, won seven games in a row. Crawford, in confidently defeating Brugnon, showed signs of returning to form. Quist, with equal ease, defeated Partridge. Apart from McGrath's triumph, the only other noteworthy events were the narrow escape of Boussus and Borotra's cunning resistance to age, heat and fatigue, by wearing out Henkel. Perry was one of the contestants in the first match played on the centre court, and he received a great ovation from an enormous crowd of enthusiasts. The champion was in exuberant mood and he vanquished his Canadian opponent in 40 minutes. The temperature at one stage exceeded 84 degrees. Results:— Men's Singles. First Round.—J.
