PRINCIPAL ACTOR

£400 FROM FARMER.

DELIBERATELY PLANNED,

BOGUS BETTING TRANSACTION

A sentence of two years' imprisonment with hard labour was passed upon Alexander Wallace Copley by Mr. Justice Fair at the Supreme Court this morning. Copley had pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to obtaining by a fraudulent betting transaction £400 from a Mercer farmer.

Copley, who was not represented by counsel, asked his Honor to temper •justice with mercy.

His Honor remarked that Copley's record was a bad one. In 15 years accused had been convicted 11 times, and he had apparently been living a shiftless and idle life. "This particular offence was deliberately planned and you were the principal actor in carrying it out," said his Honor. "You obtained £400 by a false pretence, and if you carry out crimes of this kind you must ejiffer appropriate punishment."
