MOTOR OLYMPIA.

NEWEST CARS ON VIEW. AUCKLAND DISPLAY. Cars of many types, all carrying the attractive lines of up-to-the-minute designing assembled in New Zealand, are on display in the Town Hall, where General Motors (N.Z.), Limited, began their 1935 Motor Olympia last night. Tile display will be continued througu tlie week until 11 o'clock on Saturday night.

For this display to motor car owners and others the Town Hall has been colourfully decorated. An attractive feature is the system of drapings across the stage, which is occupied by a car that is against a black background and framed with cloth to give the illusion of a gigantic painting. An orchestra has been placed out of sight behind the stage.

The models displayed are Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, vauxhall and Chevrolet. Although representing these different makes and of various types, their designs combine in showing the interesting manner in which the comparatively new principle of streamline is "being seized upon to produce an increasingly pleasing and more artistic appearance on modern cars.

Utilitarian in principle, but also having an attraction to the eye, is thg solid steel "turret top" included in some of the models. It is illustrated in an exhibit showing the full top sheet of steel before it is welded to the steel sides of the body. This feature is the latest development in improving the streamlining effect of the modem motor car, being designed to lessen wind resistance, besides giving additional safety and improving the overall appearance with a sleek beauty of finish.

Together with examples of innovations making for comfort, the Olympin contains two working exhibits of independent "knee-action front wheel springs and shock absorbers.

Among other features in several of the cars is the back luggage compartment made actually in the body ttself, and enclosing the spare wheel and a large sized travelling trunk. A recent design in small but high-powered radio sets for cars also is exhibited.
