CHINESE ROBBED.
TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON. ESCAPE FROM FLOGGING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Describing the crime as cowardly and contemptible, Mr. Justice Northcroft this morning sentenced Matthew Wallace Munro, aged 25, an unemployed man, and Adrien Chenot (37) to three years' hard labour on a charge of robbery with violence, the victim being a Chinese.
Chenot, described ae a French naval deserter, was also sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to be cumulative, on a charge of hoilsebreaking for which he was on probation at the time of the present offence.
The judge added: "It is because there is no prevalence of this type of offence at present tlm't I do not order the flogging of the prisoners;" Counsel said the affair was the result of drink.
