'PLANE TRAGEDY.
PILOT IN HOSPITAL. CONDITION NOT SERIOUS. INQUEST ON MRS. NEWMAN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HOKITIKA, this day. As the result of. yesterday's aeroplane tragedy the pilot' Mr. Harold Lawn, is now in the Westland Hospital suffering from shock and severe burns to the head, face and neck, but though his injuries are considerable his condition is not serious. The remains of Mrs. Newman, the passenger who was burnt to death after the crash, are being brought to Hokitika. An inquest was formally opened at the Westland Hospital for identification purposes and adjourned.
Flight-Lieutenant Somerset Thomas, who flew from Christchurch yesterday afternoon, after landing at Hokitika, went on to Waiho and landed in Condon's paddock, two miles from the Waiho landing ground, making a good landing in failing light. Aβ inspector of the Civil Aviation Department, he examined the scene, of the tragedy and also the landing ground.
He is expected to return to Hokitika to-day. The Departmental inquiry will be held at Hokitika at a later date.
