WINTER TROTTING.

THE AUCKLAND MEETING, EXCELLENT FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW. FORM OF THE CANDIDATES DISCUSSED.

The fields that are engaged on the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club's winter meeting at Alexandra Park to-morrow are the best that have been got together at this fixture for a long time, and the presence of several Southern horses will lend considerable interest to the racing. The track is sure to be on the heavy side, but this is only to be expected at this period of the year. However, if the weather is fine, patrons can be assured of an excellent afternoon's sport. The betting will be the two pool system—one machine paying 75 per cent and 25 per cent, where there are five or more starters, and the other two dividends (50 per cent each) for five, six or seven starters, and three dividends (33 1-3 per cent each) where there are eight starters or more.

THE OPENING EVENT.

Slow-class Trotters. The day's programme will open with the Winter Handicap, for unhoppled trotters. Captain Bolt has been showing, improved form of late on the country circuit, but La Triumph has not raced for a long time. When previously trained ' locally she showed a good turn of speed, but was very unreliable. Native ■ Princess had 41 couple of races at the country meetings, but did not show up, failing to stay over the concluding stages of her races. Nelson's Glory ran a solid race into third place at her last start, and a repetition of that form would give her a chance. Waskasn has plenty of speed, but is a. bad breaker. Worthy Nor has been working exceptionally well at Epsom and may be one of the hardest to beat. Youjg Rodney is a solid trotter, but appears to be held safe by Meadow King. The latter has raced most consistently of late and promises to start favourite. Three that may be supported MEADOW KING WORTHY NOR NELSON'S GLORY. The Improvers. A field_ of sixteen improving pacers are engaged in the Mangere Handicap and a tine race should result. Ariel Bingen has not raced for some time, but has done a solid preparation at Epsom. Bonny Azure mid Nelson Luran will be coupled, and as both have shown plenty of speed in earlier racing efforts they form a strong combination. Cherrill Jias not been working as •well as usual, but Frank Best showed plenty of promise at the recent Waikato meeting. Gloster has two placed performances to his credit,in improvers' races and cannot- be discarded. xGreat Admiral, who will compete as a trotter, is one of the most promising square-gaiters that has raded in Auckland for some time, and it would occasion no surprise to prominent at the -finish. Kia Kaha has threatened to win a ruce for a long time, but often mars his prospects by tangling when the pressure, is applied, Ranfurly Lass displayed a lot of speed in finishing second to Muriel Bond at the Cambridge meeting, and slight improvement on that effort would make her hard to beat. Scrap Iron and Spessiva will be having their firsl nice, and they may i.eed experience. Worthy Boy has only had three starts for two third placings—in the first division of the Puriri Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Thames, and the Introductory Handicap, of similar distance, at the Cnml;vidge fixture. He displayed a good deal of greenness in those races, but should now be much improved. Worthy Song shbwed a lot of speed in leading into the straight in the Novice Handicap, one mil* and a quarter, at the, recent Waik"ato meeting, and she is a likely one to effect a surprise. Great Chum and Derby Fame, off 2iyds and 36yds respectively, are both speedy pacers, and the recent success of the latter entitles him to' respect. The public may go for BONNY AZURE—

' NELSON LUVAN Bracket RANFURLY LASS WORTHY HOY. The Chief Race. The presence of four well-performed southerners in the Adams Memorial Cup, the chief event of the day, should lend much interest to "the race. Manoeuvre finished third to Bracken and Bingen Palm in the Express Handicap, two miles, on the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Club's Easter meeting, registering 4.23 1-5. In her two subsequent starts she was unplaced. She has been sore since arriving in Auckland, owing to knocking liefself on the trip up. However, the going Khould be in her favour, for she has previously shown she can handle soft ground. Wee Machine and Chancellor form a * strong bracket, the former in particular being very partial to heavy going. Bingen Chief has been racing consistently over ■ all distances of late, and, having' come through a -solid preparation at Claudelinds, should take a deal of beating. Reports-from the Waikato show that he is quite all rig-ht. The southern pacer Great j-ogan is a.fine stamp of horse that has been showing excellent form in the south, and his work at Epsom has been attractive ' despite the fact that he made a mistake yesterday. Jackie Thorpe is an honest pacer and the distance will not trouble him. Nimbus disappointed in his last two starts, but his form was too bad to be true. Yesterday he was responsible for a fine effort over a mile and a half at Epsom, and he may be the best of the locally-trained horses. Willie Derby showed signs of returning to. Ins best foim at the Waikato autumn meeting, when he finished third to Smooger and Jackie Thorpe in the Waikato Handicap, but he may find it difficult to concede a start to some of those above him. Tempest has been racing brilliantly of late in the south and on two occasions beat War Buoy (the only defeats sustained by this horse in sixteen starts). Tempest will be counted with a proved mudlark in Mountain Dell, nncl the bracket will not be neglected. Neither Auto Machine nor Kewpie s Triumph appeal. The race is very open, but a preference may be shown for

GREAT LOGAN BINGEN CHIEF TEMPEST—MOUNTAIN DELL Bracket, The Stewards' Handicap. The better-class unhoppled trotters are catered for. in the Stewards' Handicap, -which has drawn a field of eleven, Ann Parrish and Great Admiral are the only ones on the limit. The former has started six times this season' for a first; two seconds and a th.ird, her win being recorded in the Lyndhurst Handicap, one mile and a half, at Methven in 3.37 1-5, on a. holding track. Her record is a good one for her class. Great Admiral will be coupled with Te Kahu, who is on the 36yds mark, and this pair are recognised as two of the most promising young trotters. that have raced in the Auckland province for some time, and they will probably find most favour with backers. Autumn Lu is partiali to soft going, but Wiriwhata and Nekon Pirate do not appeal. Kuini- has not- raced for some time, but has provi- • ously shown good form in.trotting races. But for a habit of tangling, Mountain Sun ■would most likely reach a high class, but

he often ruins his chances through this fault. Gala Day and Mute are on the back mark (48yds), but, although they are solid trotters, they have a difficult task in fvont of them. The favourites may be GREAT ADMIRAL— i TB KAHU Bracket ANN PARRISH MOUNTAIN' SUN. The Hobson Handicap. Backers are set a hard problem in the Hobson Handicap, which includes several promising improvers. Bismuth, if in a generous mood, should be hard to beat. Bonny Azure, who is giving away time to be in the race, may be missing if unsuccessful in the Mangere Handicap. Charteris Bay, Derby Fame and Kewpie's Crest have all won on the recently concluded country circuit and have a show in this event. Our MeKinney impressed as a likely improver in his-recent racing and has previously shown ability to handle heavy going. Ironside, who recently joined J..G. Robertson's stable at Mangere, promised to reach high class as a two-year-old, but a fall resulted in his losing form, and lie has not been in the money for a long time. Rockella won the Kaipaki Handicap of a mile ai d a half at his last start, and a repetition of that form would see him in the firing line. Lucky Love is in excellent order and is a likely sort to effect a surprise. The principal fancies may be OUR McKINNEY ROCKELLA BISMUTH. The Sprint. Next comes the sprint event, the CornWall Handicap, in which a Held of sixteen well-performed pacers is accepted for. Seven figure, on the limit, and of these Herod, Homeward and Travis appeal most. Homeward has been working exceptionally well and is sure to race prominently. Bracken has been showing fine form in the south, and as he is coupled with Mountain Dell the bracket will probably be favourite. Lady Coronado will not start, but Prince Pedro, after his recent success at the Waikato meeting, will find plenty of support. Kewpie's Guy has not been working with her usual freedom, but Pegaway showed signs of returning to his best form when he finished fourth in the Te Kowhai Handicap at Claudelands earlier in the month, being only about half a length away from the winner, Bingen Chief. He did not get the best of the running, and he may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Impromptu is recognised as one of the best sprinters in the Dominion, but he-will have to be right up at the* top of his form to concede from 48yds to 84yds. The best backed may be BRACKEN - MOUNTAIN DELL Bracket. PEGAWAY PRINCE PEDRO. The Marconi Handicap. The day's sport 1 will conclude with the Marconi Handicap, for which thirteen are narded, but Electric Bell will not start. Lady Amanda and Red Hope are speedy customers, who figure on the limit, but should be held safe by Star Pronto, whose performance in winning the Ruakura Handicap at the Waikato winter meeting was full of merit. Kewpie's King has been showing signs of soreness in his work, while Peter Junior, who is a particularly smart beginner, is sure to be one of the leading division all the way. Rare Rey and King's Warrior form a very strong bracket, while Bonnie Direct has won in the past in heavy going. Kewpie's Bond has plenty of pace, but Silver Watch has not been working as well as usual. Supertax went well yesterday morning and is a possibility. The bulk of the money may go on RARE REY— KING'S WARRIOR Bracket STAR PRONTO BONNIE DIRECT. The acceptances are:— 11.37—WINTER HANDICAP (Trotters) of £125. One mile and a half. Limit 3.49.
