NUFFIELD TRUST.

CRIPPLED CHILDREN.

WHAT THE DONOR INTENDED.

APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC.

"There seems to be a little mystery in the minds of some people as to what Lord Nuffield's intentions were and just how the £00,000, which I had the honour tc receive irom bim, is going»to be spent," said Mr. U. J. B. Norwood, a member of the Nuffield Trust, in an address at a pubii.'' meeting in Wellington at which the formation of a Wellington branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society was endorsed. "It is only fair to Lord Nuffield that the position should be clearly understood," Mr. Norwood said. "The first gift made by Lord Nuffield was for £50,000 and beyond a general understanding that it was to be used for crippled children's work throughout New Zealand, there was no stipulation by him as to the way he wished, it spent. "Later, and before Lord Nuffield left New Zealand, he provided a second gift of £10,000 which was to be the nucleus of an endowment fund which he hoped would be supplemented by New Zealand people. "At Lord Nuffield's request all the Mayors throughout New Zealand were asked to open a fund for the purpose of supplementing his own grant, and some 57 Mayors indicated their willingness jto do this. But lam sorry to say that on the whole the response from the wealthier people of New Zealand was very disappointing. Certain sums, however, have been subscribed as the result of this request, but the totals have not come to hand, and I cannot, therefore, tell you the exact result. Contribution By Children. "Many semi-public bodies, including the chambers of commerce, hospital associations and women's divisions of farmers' unions throughout New Zealand, passed resolutions which gave Lord Nuffield much pleasure to receive, and I can say with confidence on his behaif that he is grateful to all those who did participate in a practical way. "One of the nicest responses and ono that pleased Lord Nuffield more than anything else, was the one sponsored by the editor of the 'Northern Advocate' (Whangarei), Mr. H. W. Crawford. Under this appeal all the whole and healthy children throughout the northern provinces were invited to contribute their pennies and small coins, and I had the pleasure of acknowledging, through the Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, the sum of £41 2/2, collected under this appeal. To. Lord Nuffield there' seemed to be something very fine in the awakening of the feelings of Hie healthy children for their less fortunate comrades." ! National Endowment Fund. , Coming to the operations of the trust, Mr. Norwood said that the trust had decided that the whole of the moneys available to the central fund should be treated as a national endowment fund, the returns from the investment of which be available to help all crippled children's societies that were now being formed through the agency of the Rotary clubs throughout New Zealand. "The funds of the trust are entirely separate from any funds that may be collected by the Wellington district branch. All Wellington membership subscriptions will go into the Wellington branch fund and be used at their discretion for purely local purposes." Mr. Norwood closed with a strong appeal to all people to help the crippled children's societies. "Let your sons and daughters become members at the • minimum subscription. Let all healthy people' think that whatever may be their sacrifice in the help they give, it is really nothing when compared with the unfortunate cripples wno, in many instances, are too young yet to know what a dreadfully black future lies ahead of them."
