Electrically-heated vegetable beds have been pronounced a great success in Erfurt, Germany's horticultural centre. Wires I were laid one foot beneath the surface i of the soil, and radishes, lettuce and tomatoes have responded to the artificial warmth with splendid results. The radishes, for instance, sprang up one week after being sown, and, after tour weeks, surpassed radishes sown a month earlier on a neighbouring unheated bed. lhe electric current is supplied at special rates, and it is estimated that the profit to be derived from an electrically-heated bed should double that from one that is not wired. The process is one of the means now being tested, whereby Germany hopes to make herself independent of food imported from, abroad. i
