WINTER BOWLS.

THREE RUNAWAY MATCHES. TROPHIES CHANGE HANDS. PERSONAL NOTES. (By TRUNDLER.) Even the late Captain Edwin, in the height of his fame as a weather prophet, could not have selected a finer afternoon than Saturday for the weekly contest for his silver stars, the only afternoon of the week without rain, while a dead calm promised more accurate play than usual. This promise was not realised, the game being very one-sided all the way, with the following result:—G. Oake, W. Ure, C. G. Maker, E. B. Bennet (Auckland), challengers, 27,- v. G. H. Keeling, T. C. Schnackenberg, L. Bray, T. S. Bassett (Onehunga), holders, 10.

There were only two reasons why the Onehunga rink lost the trophies. The first was that none of them played anything approaching the form they produced when they won, and the second was that the visitors played "a game out of the box." Keeling certainly had two touchers on one head, but nearly always Oake held the shot, and frequently had both counting. On the rare occasions when he missed the shot Ure recovered it, or else played into such a nice position that Malier could either promote him or trail for two, while in one head the latter had both of his bowls alongside the jack, one on each side, not more than four inches away, although played on opposite hands. The consequence was that Bennet did not have much to do, but when there was the necessity he was remarkably successful. In one head, when Onehuuga were lying three or four, he put the jack in the ditch for two, and in another, when his drive was a little narrow, he saved about five by picking up the jack with a rub, sitting on it in the ditch. Against such a combination of good play and good luck, nearly always the former, Bassett was helpless, but even in the aforesaid head he drew within" a yard of the ditch for second shot, only to be beaten by Bennet with another, actually touching the kerb. He also played a wonderful save on the same hand in a long head, where Auckland' were lying at least four, stopping on the shot bowl, and in the last head he gently pushed out the shot bowl for one and a measure. With 17 to the good, the visitors did not trouble to put the string on it, and the margin would have been still heavier if Bassett had not come in among them on other occasions.

This week's challengers are T. D. Anderson, W. Gladstone, H. R. Goldsmith, S. E. Chappell (Balmoral), followed by G. Clark (Mount Albert), G. McMillan (Remuera) and J. A. Robertson (Waitemata).

There was a very similar runaway score in the Jordan Pins, the score being: R. McKenzie, J. S. Hardwicke, H. Hay, G. E. Wood (Ellerslie), challengers, 28, v. W. Norton, T. H. Sissons, H. Johnson, S. Moore. (Te Papapa), holders, 9. Norton was the only member of the local rink who displayed his usual form, the others being so overwhelmed that .the visitors were 5 to 1, 9 to 1, 15 to 3, and steadily increased their lead. The next challenger is S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro').

The Onehunga visitors -to Grey _ Lynn had quite an easy run in the Diggers' Badges and soon .established a big lead, which they had no difficulty in retaining to the end, the final score reading: J. K. Ross, G. H. Bray, H. A. Robertson, S. Vella (Onehunga) 29, v. T. Walker, R. Teague, J. C Preston, R. Caddy (Grey holders, 18. TReF next challengers are H. Caterall (Takapuna), J. H. Braithwaite (Epsom), C. E. Brooke (Buckland's Beach), J. Gifford (Auckland), and that will be all who can play, even with fine weather,/Jjefore these matches at&«interrupted by the twoSaturday tournament for returned soldiers on July 20 and 27.

Onehunga will hold on open tournament on Thursday 'of this week.

Rocky Nook just managed to retain the iDeriison Pins against Waitemata, the score being: W. E. Oughton, E. C. Winthrop, R.-Ellisdon,/W. A. Loram. (holders) 18, v.' W. Marshall, W. L. Rowland, W. Copeland, W- Corrin (challengers) 17. The next on the list are C. E. Hardley (West End), A. Macpherson (Rawhiti) and J. Wright (Epsom). Next Saturday the full Rocky Nook ipnk will play, whereas for the last two Saturdays two members were in the post-section play of the King's Birthday tournament at Onehunga,. which they won. Cordial sympathy has been 'expressed towards. Mr. W. F. Hardley, a former president of West End, who has been very seriously ill for several weeks. It was hoped that he would be able to return home from hospital last week, but he has not yet shown sufficient improvement to make this a safe move.

The many friends of Mr. G. A. Wyni yard, of the same club, have been very pleased .to see.him, about again, after his indisposition of several months. He tried a trip to Sydney for change of air, and it seems-to have done him a lot of good, although at the time he did not feel equal to taking part in any games, so he merely looked on occasionally. His friends will feel more satisfied when they see him putting on a little, more weight. ! Elderly howlers would be reminded of the wonderful vitality of some of their friends 'when they saw last week the announcement of the death of Mr. E. F. Cooksey, for he had, reached the great age of 86 years. Apparently bowls had kept him young, for he never looked as if he- had passed the allotted span, and only the previous week he was in his, usual place on the Ellerslie green, as keen as ever.' The' late Mr. Cooksey was one of the 37 members of the Auckland Veteran Bowlers' Association who had passed the age of 80 years, and at the annual reunion in February he was ihe youngest member of the official rink, with the president of the association as skip. They had a splendid contest, with the following result, their ages being given in parentheses:—F. Bluck (89), J. Rendell (95), R. G. Newbegin (89), J. V. Dingie (87) .17, v. .E. F. Cooksey. (86), H. C. Choyce (95), F. Bennett (88), Arthur Selby(B9) 15. . Intending competitors in the Fi]i annual tournament, to commence'in Suva on Juiy 27, will have to be making up their rinks, for they must' leave Auckland vby the Aorangi on July 23. About a month ago a paragraph in the Dunedin "Star" stated that three players from South Auckland were going, and had written asking if any from Dunedin would join them. Two or three in Auckland are also talking about it, but it will be very difficult for them to make up a rink if they depend on*.private inquiries. By far the best way would be for them to give their names to Mi-. Gladding, secretary of the Auckland Centre, not in any way to commit themselves, but merely as an intimation that 'they are thinking about it, with a view to going if a fairly strong party can be made up. The writer would willingly assist by giving publicity to any proposals towards this end. and by helping to bring too-ether anv of the possibles or probables who would'like to spend a few weeks in the tropics during the winter. . It is understood that one rink is oeing made up in Oamarii, probably in charge of Mr D. H. Thomson, who was leader of the large party who competed in tins tournament some years ago,-and also that there will be a rink from Invercargill. INTER-CLUB GAMES. ROCKY NOOK V. WATTESIATA.
