Th» Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting was concluded at Hastings to-day in fine weather, and before a good attendance. The racing wae excellent, and the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase was one of the best jumping contests seen on the course for some years. All the starters kept well together throughout, and the three placed horses took the last fence almost abreast. The winner, Petrarch, is an aged bay gelding by Arausio irom Waterlea, and he is trained at Awapuni by Mrs. A. W. McDonald for Mr. L. H. Collinson. The totalisator handled £6098 10/, compared with £6710 on the second day last year. The total investments for the meeting amounted to £10,135, against £11,357 last year. Sunny Maid (Hastings Handicap) and Esteem (Whakatu Hurdles) were the early winners. After the running of the Whakatu Hurdles, A. McDonald, the rider of Gold Cure, was before the stewards for careless riding. Gold Cure was four or five lengths in front at the last hurdle, and appeared to be winning easily, but Esteem got up to beat him by a head.
