BIRKENHEAD PROGESS.
HIGHBURY CORNER CEREMONY
The- steady progress of Birkenhead has baon'exemplified by tho growth of the business area at Highbury Corner, where a branch, post office with up-to-date oquipment was opened this morning. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, the key was turned by the Mayoress, and the ollieo was dueliuod open by the deputy-Mayor, Mr. Albert. I-Indfield.
Mr. J. Prlekett, chairman of the public service* committee, presided.
Mr. J. P. P. Clour.ton, chief postmaster at Auckland, congratulated the residents on getting the oiliee opened. The Department marched with the progress-of the district, and provided facilities when necessary. Tlie section of land adjoining tho building in which the branch business would be conducted was owned by the Department, with a view to future requirements. Mr.' W. H. Payne had foreseen the possibilities of the locality as a business centre. Mr, H. J. Keenan had been placed in charge of the Highbury office, but they would soon be losing him, for he had been appointed postmaster at Russell.
Mr. A. Hadfleld thanked Mr. Clouston for the sympathetic manner in which he had dealt with the application of the Borough Council.
The first tolegrum to bo dispatchod from tho now office was from tho Mayoress, Mre. G. Mills, to the Post-master-General, tho Hon. Adam Hamilton, as follows: "New branch post office at Highbury Corner opened this morning. People of Birkenhead convey appreciation of your assistance."
Falling from a ladder this morning at George Court and Sons', Ltd., where he was employed as a window dresser's assistant. Harold Dick, aged 18, of 11, Richmond Road", Poiißonby, suffered concussion. He was taken by St. John ambulanco to the Auckland Hospital. His condition is not regardod as serious.
