CALLIOPE CLUB.

OPEN ROAI> RACE AT TAKAPTJNA. W. G. BAKER FIRST HOME. Yesterday the Calliope Harrier Club conducted the first open race of the season at Takapuna, over a course of three miles 1200 yards. The field was 40, and although the first two men were clear of the rest of the field, there were some great tussles for the minor places. Tho limit man, F. Ilardman (Calliope), set a good pace from the 5.30 mark, and ho was followed by R. Fagau, of the same cluii, 30s later. Next came a bunch of six. followed at intervals by small bunches of three or four men, until the scratch man, J. W. Savidan, was sent oil to the accoin-

panlment of cheering. Fast time was made to the half-way mark at Milford, with Savidan running, beautifully and fast gaining on his field. Along Shakespeare Road the majority of the runners bunched, Baker and Dolaa, however, going to the front. With a mile to go Raker, of the Lynndale Club, led by 120 yards, and, finishing well, ho maintained his lead to the finish, .r. Doiiiu, of the same club, also came home well to head the I'lipatoetoe runner It.

The W'aitemata Gadles* Harrier Club held its first race for the season on Saturday lust. The weather wns ideal for running.'
