VICE-REGAL RECEPTION

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION,

A largely-attended reception, which was enjoyable in every way, was given last evening at Government House by their Excellencies tlie Governor-General, Lord Galway, and Lady Galwmy, to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the King.

The scene in the ballroom was brilliant. On either side of the dais were large stands containing bamboo and flax, while scarlet poinsettias gave the required touch of colour and linked up with the crimson which carpeted the floor. Overhead were hanging baskets of fern, and in the tall clumps of bamboo which were in each corner were golden and yellow chrysanthemums which added to the colourful effect. Popular music was played by the band stationed at the end of the room.

Bowls of arum lilies, beautifully arranged, and bowls of narcissi in a lower setting made effective decoration in the reception roome, and here also bowls o:? orchide -were to be seen. The whole scene was added to by the pretty frocks worn by the women guests and the colourful uniforms of the naval, military and air force guests who were present. Supper was served in the dining room and on the verandahs which had been enclosed with awnings.

I Their Excellencies entered the ballroom at 8.30 and toolc up their positions in front of the dais. They were attended by Major A. F. Purvis, military secretary; Captain A. G. W. HebcrPercy, A.D.C.,; and Lieutenant Sir SCandish Roche, R.N., A.D.C.

Lady Galway wore a handsome gown of gold lame and lace over olive green satin. The skirt had a slight train and a shoulder cape of gold lame gave a striking touch to the frock. Her Excellency wore on her head a halfcirclet of diamonds. Mrs. A. F. Purvis wore a frock of black souple satin cut on slim fitting lines.
