TRADE WITH JAPAN.
CONSIGNMENTS OF PRODUCE. DUNEDIN MAN'S ENTERPRISE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. An important step in fostering trade between New Zealand and Japan has been taken with the dispatch of a sample shipment of Otago and Southland butter and cheese and .North Island lamb. When Mr. J. Shand, a Dunedin resident, was recently in Japan he made inquiries regarding the possibilities of a market for produce from Otago and Southland, and was told that if the goods were of the quality he represented them to be there was a possibility of a substantial trade being developed. He was asked to make some small sample shipments of lamb, butter, cheese and pork. After experiencing some difficulty Mr. Shand has been able to arrange for the shipment of samples by the steamer Melbourne Maru, which leaves Wellington on June 10. The shipment will comprise samples of butter and cheese from factories in Otago and Southland. In respect to lamb, Mr. Shand was unable to procure refrigerating space from here to make connection with Wellington, and was- therefore, compelled to arrange for. a sample of North Island lamb °to be forwarded. The shipment has been arranged by the.secretary of the O.S.K. Line, and the samples will be carried free.
