MILFORD SOUND.

COMPLETION OF ROAD.

TWO-WAY TUNNEL WANTED. LIGHTHOUSE NEEDED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Suggestions for the development of the Eglinton Valley Road and Milford Sound as a tourist, resort were placed before the Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts, Mr. Hamilton, by a deputation from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce. The deputation also brought before the Minister proposals for the encouragement of tourist traffic generally in the South Island.

The completion of the road to Milford Sound at the earliest possible date was urged by the deputation, which also stressed the desirability of having the proposed tunnel at the approach to the Sound made sufficiently wide to permit of two-way traffic. Attention was drawn to the necessity for a survey of the coast in the vicinity of Milford, the deputation suggesting that it should be one of the earliest works carried.out by the Marine Department, which was arranging for various parts of the New Zealand coast to be charted in the near future. The necessity of a lighthouse at the entrance to the Sound was also mentioned.

The Minister said he was interested to know that the Chamber of Commerce was so whole-hearted with support of the construction of the road to Milford. The question of the size of the tunnel had recently been under consideration, and it was his opinion, and also that of the Public Works Department, that the tunnel should be one capable of carrying two-way traffic. He appreciated the need of a light at the entrance to the Sound, and had already made representations to the Minister of Marine. He would place also before the Minister of Marine representations made to him regarding the charting of the coastline.
