COST OF MEALS.

AUCKLAND RESTAURANTS.

STATEMENT BY ASSOCIATION.

The fact that one restaurant in Auckland has decided to revert from the charge of 1/1? for a three-course meal to 1/ was commented upon yesterday by Mr. A. Page on behalf of the Auckland Restaurantkeepers* Association. Mr. Page said that all restaurant proprietors were of the opinion that the price of meals should be raised to 1/3 and signed an agreement that meals should be sold at that price. It was to be expected that there woidd be a decline in trade, but that the figures would give a payable margin to proprietors. Proprietors were unanimous, said Mr. Page, that it was impossible to supply a three-course meal at I/-, and continue very long in business. The increased cost of commodities such as meat, vegetables and milk made it imperative that an increase should be made, and it was certain that to continue at the old figure would spell ruin to a number of small restaurant proprietors and proprietresses. The price of meals was lower in Auckland than in any other centre in New Zealand, and the quality of the meal was in keeping with the price charged.
