RACING AT TE RAPA.

TE KUITI MEETING.

THE OPENING DAY.

SEVERAL SURPRISE VICTORIES

After rain overnight the weather cleared yesterday morning for the opening of the To Kuiti Racing Club's meeting at To Rapa. However, it remained dull and cold. There was a good attendance, considering the conditions, and during the day the sum of £13,004 was put through the totulisator, compared with £15,0U0 for the first day last year, which was a Saturday, a decrease of £1900. The racing was good throughout, though there were some surprises, chief of which was Prince Acre in the Otoroluuiga Hack Handicap. The President's. Might was the only scratching in the President's Handicap, in which the chief fancies were Gay Rose, Delrain and King Roy, the last-named winning by a length. Paesiiig the stand Sinking Fund had charge from Mercian Prince, Gay Lap, Mungatoon, Gay Rose, Bonny Gay and King Rcy, with ling's Archer, Prince- Colossus, Delrain, King Musk and First Lap. Gay Lap had run to the front along the back, his nearest attendants being Sinking Fund, Mercian Prince, Mungatoon, King Rey, Gay Rose, Bonny Gay. King's Archer, Prince Colossus, and King Musk. The last-named began to move up at this stage, and the order across the top wae Sinking Fund and Gay Lap (together), King Rey, Bonny Gay, King Musk, Mercian Prince, Mungatoon and Prince Colossus. Sinking Fund then began to drop back, and Gay Rose moved up smartly to join Gay Lap as they turned for home, this pair being followed by King Rey, Bonny Gay and King Musk. King Rey finished best to get the- verdict by a length from King Musk, who beat Gay Rose by a neck. Gay Lap, First Lap, Bonny Gay. Delrain, Mercian ■ Prince and Sinking Fund finished in that order. Solanio Wins Steeples. Mia Stella and Copcy were not saddled up for the King Country Steeplechase, and when betting ceased Riotous, Royal Limond and London carried the bulk of the money. Racing along the back the first time Riotous led from Solanio. Ruby Meteor, Clareniore, London and Magic Land, with Billy Boy, Valpeen and Free Air next. Riotous fell at the sodwall at the top of the straight, and Solanio had charge passing the stand from Valpeen, London, Clareniore, Ruby Meteor, Billy Boy and Free Air. Along the back the order was Claremore, Royal Limond, Ruby Meteor, Free Air and Billy Boy, -with London, who dropped right back last. Solanio still held sway across the top from Free Air, Claremore, Royal Limond, London and Valpeen. The firstnamed pair turned for home ahead of Royal Liniond, London and Claremore, the last.-named falling at the sodwall at the top of the straight, Valpeen being the nearest of the others. Solanio cleared the last fence eafely, and was winning easily when Royal Limond challenged and got .to within half a length of him, with Free Air six lengths away. London, Valpeen, Ruby Meteor, Billy Boy and Magic Land were next. A Big Dividend. t When the field lined up for the Otorohanga Handicap On Parade, Te Hal, Laudatory, Peter Paul and Keith Lu ■were missing, and Adalene, Royal Dance and the Whirling-Lady Diana bracket "were in most demand. Grand Score caused trouble at the post, and was Eventually, left, the early leaders being landlubber, Roman Mascot, Swift Spear, Lady Diana, Whirling, Orac and High •Tea. ■ Landlubber and Roman Mascot iehowed the way across the top, with Whirling, Royal Dance, High Tea, Air jLassie and Prince Acre handy. Entering the straight Landlubber was just clear of Prince Acre, High Tea and Roman Maecot, and then came Whirling, Royal Dance and Gay Egypt. Landlubber and •Roman Mascot were fighting out the finish when High Tea and Prince Acre put in their claims, the latter getting up to win by half a length from Roman Mascot, with High Tea a neck away, landlubber, Orac, Gay E<rvpt, Royal Dance, Adalene, Silver Briar, Polly iJDouglaa and Whirling were next. * The winner paid nearly a third ef a century. v'Just before reaching the post the bit <in the bridle of Prince Acre broke, but ]iis rider did not lose command of the tlorse. t

A Close Finish. 3 Star Artist did not parade for the Stewards' Handicap, and in a good betting race most support was accorded Cay Scton, Tradesman and Gipey Moth, Hut Orapai proved too good for them, fvhen they had settled down Boughal Was in charge from Gipsy Moth, Ja'Allegro, Gay Seton and Orapai, then iollowcd Lion Heart. Hampton Park, Exaggeration, Tradesman and Wait and jjee. Boughal and Gipsy Moth were 4he teadcrs across the top from Scotland, fifay Seton, Hampton Park, Orapai, J'Allcgro, Exaggeration, Tradesman, %ion Heart and Leo Colossus. Boughal find Gay Seton were first round the- bend from Gipsy Moth, Scotland and Srapai, the lastnamed coming through j&et to get up and win by half a length |eom Tradesman, who also finished very fast to beat.Gipsy Moth by a neck for Second money, Gay Seton, Hampton V, ark Scotland, Leo Colossus, Wait and geo and Lion Heart were next, with f.oughal last. Instalment led into tho straight from Tybalt and Holly Lu (together), Keith Lu, Grand Talk, Bush Lawyer, Green Patch, Arawa Rose, Nahlin and Ford Acre. Tybalt and Holly Lu were in front hnlf-wny down when Green Patch came on tho outside, and Arawa Rose finished fast on the raile, but Tybalt held on to beat Green Patch by half a length, with Arawa Eose a similar distance away third.
