LATE MR. CARLAW.

LEAGUE FOOTBALL PIONEER

ADMINISTRATORS' TRIBUTES,

Expressions of regret at the death of Mr. James Carlaw, of Mount Eden, a pioneer of Rugby League football in New Zealand, were general in Auckland yesterday, and Mrs. Carlaw and the family received messages of condolence from many parts of New Zealand, and also from abroad. "A long and notably valuable life to the service of the people of Auckland and to New Zealand has ended," said Mr. G. Grey Campbell, chairman of the Auckland Rugby 1 League board of control, and ono of the trustees of the organisation. "1 think it will be generally conceded thnt few men have been able and willing to give to a sport more than Mr. James Carlaw gave to Auckland. The story of his energetic career as a public officer and his many activities in sport does not need recounting, because Carlaw Park will ever remain as a living monument to his foresight, and accomplishment. Supporters of the Leaguo code will remember him ae an exemplar of selflessness and progressive sportsmanship." The president of the council of the New Zealand 'Rugby League, Mr. Cyril Sneddon, on behalf of the national administrators of the code and its supporters throughout New Zealand, expressed the regret felt at the passing of Mr. Carlaw. Greatly as he was esteemed ns a citizen and pioneer officer of the municipality, his reputation in sport whs even greater. As an officer in Rugby League football his name was familiar throughout New Zealand, and known and respected by officials, players and supporters in England and Australia. A man of high principles, practical ability and vision, he endeared himself to all. The funeral, which took place this afternoon at Walkumete cemetery, wao largely attended.
