COLLEGE RIFLES TOO CLEVER

In a close game on No. 2 ground at Eden Park, College Hides shaded Technical Old Boys by a fraction for most of the game, and finished up winners by 5 points to 3. There was little between tho two teams, and until the cnll of time it was anybody's game, despite that lUfles did most of the attacking. Technical wen; first on Hit board, gaining a try in the first quarter, when Haslnm made >\n opening for Ijikli to score. Murdoch's kick missed. Five minutes later Kifles got their only try, wl line work between Pedrotl nnd Martin enabled the latter to score. Vear made n tine effort with the kick, taken at an acute angle, but he was lucky. The direction was excellent, but the kick a trifle short, and the ball bumped the cross-bar before rolling over to give Rifles the extra points that won them th« game. The green forwards looked mucn heavier than the blues, nnd they were dangerous throughout both spells, Kenne, Weber and Burston being most prominent. However, the Rifles men went down fearlessly ami consistently to formidable dribbling rushes, anil gained tho few seconds necessary for the backs to gather round. The Technical rearguard seemed to be at sdxe.s nnd sevens, nnd never looked like putting up a score. It is true they were wrTl marked, nnd the opposing forwards gave their halt little breathing space. Haymond nt full gave a good display. The Ititles pack heeled out better, nnd Thomson, who was in capital form, rarely failed to get the bnll smartly away to his five-eighths, Among the backs .Pedroti put in n line afternoon's work, but the whole of the rearguard were entitled to credit for snappy play nnd resourceful tactics.
