WANGANUI MEETING.
TRISHNA'S GOOD GALLOP. STANCHION SCHOOLS WELX. NEW STARTING BARRIER. (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, Monday. Manawatu is not engaged in the hurdles on tlie first day at Wuuganui, but is to be given a run in the Balgownie Hack Handicap. On Saturday ho is to contest the May Hurdles.
Tupeotu, a big upstanding gelding by Potoa, in W. 11. Dwyer'a stable, was given his tirst race at the recent Manawatu meeting. He showed a disinclination to lace the barrier, but with the practice he has had since should do better here, as he lias a fair amount of pace. There was no work of importance yesterday, and the only one to go fast this morning vvae British Columbia, who slipped over half a mile in good style. This gelding looks in great fettle, and on Hawera form should pick up some money here.
This morning Midian was given three circuits of good pa.ee work. The Weathervane gelding has a bright appearance, and if in the humour to show of his best should give a good account of himself in the Empire Handicap. Caen was sent a round at from half to three-quarter pace and hit out freely. She is a good-looking sort, and had evidently shown her connections something good, as she was verj confidently backed at Hawera, The tinner going at Wanganui will probably be more to her liking. Merry Ruler moved very inceiy in covering a circuit this morning, and 13 likely to run prominently at the meeting. Trishna and Kurapae are due this evening from Hawera. The Eormer put up a good gallop on [Saturday, when lie iinislied a neck ahead of Carfex,\ with Aga Khan a length further back, running the seven furlongs on the outside of the course proper in 1.34 1-3. It was a g:>od effort on the part of 'Trishna as he had much the worst of the weights—nearly two stone more than Aga Khan and three more than Carfex, who made the early pace, but was cut down in impressive style by Trishna. Stanchion shaped well on Saturday in a spin over three furlongs on the tlat, run in a tick under 40s, and later gave a good display in a round over the schooling hurdles. lie appears much improved since racing at Hawera. An improvement in barrier starting apparatus will be employed at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting this week. It is a new electrical release, the invention of Mr. C. Savage, of Wanganui, in collaboration with Mr. W. C. Price, the well-known starter. It is a .simple, but most efficacious, appliance. Carrying the switch in his hand, the starter may operate the barrier from a point several yards in front of the actual barrier, which he may release the moment he judges the field to be in line. The new barrier, was given a trial during the Wanganui Trottin" Club's meeting, and experts were greatly taken with it. At the recent Hastings meeting it was demonstrated, and so impressed were the committee there that they asked that it be installed for the second day of the meeting. I his was done, and the result was voted very satisfactory.
