THE TABERNACLE.
JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.
FIFTY YEARS' ACTIVITIES
The jubilee functions of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle opened last evening, and will be continued throughout the week. The Rev. Dr. Alexander Hodge, minister of the Tabernacle, presided over a largo attendance, and congratulatory messages were brought by the Rev. John Laird, president of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, and the Rev. M. W. P. Lascelies, secretary of the union.
Mr. Laird, in his address, referred to the work of the Tabernacle during the past half-century. In its training of students nnd by its generosity in assisting tho general funds of the church, it had been a tower of strength. Although Baptists comprised less than 2 per cent of the Dominion's population, the Tabernacle was one of the largest of Auckland's churches. The spiritual and social work of tho Tabernacle was greatly valued by other denominations in the city, and if it was true that a church could be measured by w'nat it gives and not by what It gets, then the Tabernacle was truly a great church.
This evening a musical evening will be held, when a programme, "Hymns and Tunes of Long Ago." specially'prepared for the occasion, will be rendered. On Thursday evening there will be a reunion of old members jind other functions will be arranged for Saturday and Sunday.
