PROTECTION SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the Xew Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held in the society's rooms yesterday afternoon. Rev. Father Colgan occupied the chair. The reports of the secretary and of tilt inspector showed an exceptionally heavy month's work, and constituted a record in the history of the society for the number of days the ofliee was open. Oflice interviews numbered (k>2, new ca«es 73, inspector's visits to homes, institutions, etc., 112, attendance at Magistrate's and Children's Courts, 12. Many cases dealt with hardship and tragedy caused through desertion and failure to maintain, cruelty and callousness, others dealt with unemployed fjirls. affiliation cases, and reported neglect of children. The sum ot £113 10/ maintenance wns received and paid to clients. The ladies' committee was thanked for the financial assistance rendered. The sympathy of the hoard was expressed with Mrs. Paterson and Dr. Purchas in their illnesses.
