DUNEDIN'S VOTE.

LABOUR VICTORY. MAYORALTY AND COUNCIL HEAVIEST POLL ON RECORD. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUXEDIX, this day. For the first time in Duncdin'e history the city has both a Labour Mayor and a Labour majority in control of the council. The new council is:—F. Jones, M.P. (15,009 votes), Dr. D. G. McMillan (15,462), J. W. Munro, M.P. (14,987), Mark Silverstonc (14,058), W. Be™ (13,338), W. A. Scott (12,072), A. IL Allen (12,810), F. W. Mitchell (12,500), W. H. Shepherd (12,299), P. Xeilson' (11,974), D. C. Cameron (11,917), W. Batchelor (11,081). Messrs. Jonee, McMillan, Munro, Silveretone, Xeilson and Batchelor are the Labour members.

Judging by the large number of votes recorded for Mr. R. S. Black, a split vote in the heaviest poll on record wae undoubtedly a factor that contributed to the Rev. E. T. Cox's victory in the mayoral contest. With the mayoral term extended to three years, Mr. Cox will have occupied the mayoral chair for a longer continuWii period than anyone else since the establishment of municipal government here 70 years ago.

The six councillors returned, on behalf of Labour arc balanced by an equal number elected on behalf of the Citizens' Association, but the Mayor's vote (even without his casting vote) will turn the scale in favour of Labour. In the Hospital Board election eix old members were returned, Labour gaining one seat, per Mr. Mark Silverstonc. For the Harbour Board three sitting members wero returned, and the Citizens' party and Labour each won another seat. ' Labour has now two members on each board. Parliamentary Candidates. Dr. McMillan, who was second on the list of the council candidates, is the Labour candidate to oppose the Hon. W. Downio Stewart for "Dunedin YVcet at the general election. Mr. Neilson, who is to oppose Sir Charles Stathitn, for Dunedin Central, was also elected, It is rumoured now that the Mayor, Mr. Cox, may contest Chalmere, instead of Clutha, at the general election. Details of the mayoral voting are:— Rev. E. T. Cox 12,077 J. J. Marlow 10,406 R. S. Black 5,210 Majority for Cox ... 1,671 The results of the 1933 election were:— Rev. E. T. Cox 10,742 R. S.
