LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

RICHMOND'S GOOD WIN. MT, ALBERT'S SECOND HALF. HUNTLY BOW TO NEWTON RANGERS. To complete the second series of matches in the Auckland Rugby League championship, Richmond Rovers notched a comfortable win over Mount Albert United by 27—13 in a fast and varied contest, which, combined with the curtainraiser, in which Newton Rangers had to go all out to beat a vigorous young Huntly thirteen, provided a good outdoor attraction for Jubilee holiday-makers, who rolled up in large numbers at Carlaw Park. A cold south-westerly wind prevailed, and the ground was in perfect order.

Richmond held the balance of power in a match which yielded some periods of exciting play in the second half, when the Mount Albert team, maintaining its early hooking superiority, made a'very determined bid for recovery, aided by a rearrangement of the backs. In this stanza Mount Albert scored 11 points to 14 by the opposition. The feature of Mount Albert's play was the pace and tackling of its forwards, particularly Gunning, Spiro, List and Shadbolt, List also appearing to advantage in the open. The- pack, with Flannagan hookiug, was surprisingly successful against the powerful sextet of Richmond. Satherley and Lawless were outstanding, and Tetley showed fine versatility for the maroons. Even with a poor service front the scrums Powell was below form at half-back, but Bickerton, Cooke and Mincham were on their toes, with the result that Mitchell and McNeil sparkled. McNeill, of Mount Albert, improved as the game went on, and was more than a match for his namesake. Hassan, who started at full-back, played better in the second half at fiveeighths, although not yet at his best, and B. Schultz was weak, both on the wing and in the rear line. On the right wing J. Schultz showed some promise. At centre C. Dunn was clever, but erratic. Morissey was not impressive in the first half, and Martin, behind the scrum, revealed enterprise in the later stages. Mount Albert will require to improve.

The early match should prove very useful to Newton Hangers in disclosing some weaknesses. Frnnich did well, but went too far on occasions. Hulme (ex-Panmure Union team) was seen at his best as an inside, back, but needs to develop greater speed off the mark. Johnson, Quirke and Limn were in forward form against a fine ; Huntly pack, in which Timms, Siddle and Hughes were prominent. The Hart brothers, D. Whorskey and Braun were good backs, and the tall Shaw was a favourite, and reliable custodian. SOUTH AUCKLAND. Tauplri 17, beat Huntly 6.
