MY REPLY. P.O. Box 21. Auckland. May 4, 1035. Mr. L. B. Busfield, Hon. Secretary, Executive Committee. Council of Christian Congregations, Auckland. Sir, —I linve given your circular letter of 30tli ult. "To Candidates for Election to the Auckland City Council" my careful consideration. While I am opposed to giving definite pledges on matters of public policy, which I think should be determined on their respective merits when the proper occasion arises for their examination, yet I feel that. In courtesy to your Executive Committee, some expression of my views Is necessary on the particular questions submitted by you. Regarding Question 1. It appears to me that its wording is sufficiently wide to exclude the playing of all games on Sundays in Public Parks and Domains, ns anv game is a "competitive" one. Although' I am quite averse to seeing Sundavs iu New Zealand becoming alike to Continental Sundays. I do not see any grave objection to Friendly Games being engaged in on Sundays, especially after the usual hours of Church Services, and providing those games are carried on under proper regulation and In such a manner as will not offend tile susceptibilities of the community In general. So far as I am concerned, I would deal with eacii application for permission to play games on its merits, and. In deciding the question. I would have full regard to the proprieties and the necessities of tiie case. However, I would be opposed definitely to Organised Competitive Games on a Large Scale being conducted in Public Parks and Domains on Sundays. My reply to Question 2 Is I do not see why Picture Theatres should be allowed to open for business on Sundays, and such openings would not have my support. Yours truly, 7 ERNEST DAVIS. TO "^LECTORS. All Tickets in the present campaign have been issued in the interests of one or other of the political parties. NO PARTY HAS A MONOPOLY OF INTELLIGENCE.
