The origin of the name "cat's cradle" is uncertain, n'eitlier is it known when it was first played. Some consider it to be a corruption of "cratch-cradle," "cratcli" being an Old English name for manger, and maintain that the first figure in the game, which is played with string stretched across the hands, represents the cradle of Christ However, these theories have never been established.
